Love and Other Scandals by Caroline Linden is a fun, delicious read. Lord Burke is the consummate rake in London’s high society and Joan, well…she’s been on the shelf for a few years. Is it because she’s fat, or ugly, or because her mother dresses her in the most ridiculous gowns?
I really loved reading how Lord Burke and Joan met and started realizing how they felt about each other. It has a bit of a naughty ending but it was refreshing to read a book where there was no irritating evil mastermind behind some big misunderstanding. I think Joan acted like a real girl kept under tight reign by her mother. She was fun and innocent, but curious and adventure bound. Lord Burke also had a depth that a lot of rakes lack.
Some of the side characters were really interesting too such as her two girlfriends eager for naughty tales just as much as any friends in our era. The brother was comical and the dad surprising. I also loved the aunt and her relationship with her lover and two dogs. Very cute.
I dare any woman not to fall in love with Lord Burke! The intimate scenes were written with the woman in mind. Sensuality and new experiences handled with such care, it really pulled me into the story. I thought it was interesting how the author used new invention and ‘differences’ in fashion to bring the feeling of a new age coming. An age where these two could fall in love.
