Gavin is an ex-sailor and newly appointed Duke because of his brothers untimely death. Angry at the world and his circumstances, his focus is on revenge for his brother’s killer. When his best friend from childhood shows up, his life is interrupted for once in a good way.

Grace used to be a young girl he called Gigi, but now she’s a beautiful young woman on the marriage market. When Gavin’s mother tries to marry her off to one of London’s most eligible bachelors, Gavin finds he’s jealous. He could certainly be her friend after the marriage, but Gavin discovers he wants to be much more. Could a love started when they were children, blossom into an adult relationship? Can hurt feelings over a bunch of lost letters stand in the way of their true love? Can Grace forgive him for abandoning her when she needed him most? These are all questions I was excited to find resolution to and the text did not disappoint.

When an overzealous suitor threatens to destroy their happiness, it tests Gavin’s love, pushing them both to decide if their love is worth fighting for.

Inspired by Grace is just the sort of Regency that’s fun to read. The bad guys are really bad and the good guys have faults, but try their best to overcome them. I enjoyed reading about these two old friends. The little jokes and pet names were fun to be a part of and I liked reading how each of them recounted days from the past that meant so much to them both. For those of you concerned with such matters, there are a few religious references in this book, but they aren’t overbearing enough to feel preachy. In fact, the religious sections are used in such a way as to help the characters learn more about each other.

Gavin is a character that we could easily love if this turned into a series and Grace has just enough Lizzy in her to keep me reading. My favorite co-star is Silence, Gavin’s best mate. He has some really great parts and I could see him spinning off into his own story.

If you’re looking for something that is not Jane Austen but is period, this book is for you. The characters also talk about the book Persuasion and the fact that Gavin is an ex-sailor, it is clear the author is giving a nod to Jane’s classic.
